Programmes – Study Visits
Experience Dutch cycling in practice
A DCE study visit brings professionals and decision-makers to the Netherlands to experience Dutch cycling practice first-hand. Meet the people behind policies and projects, explore infrastructure on the ground and discuss the choices, challenges and lessons behind what you see.
Every city and region starts from a different place. A delegation exploring regional cycling connections needs something different from a city redesigning neighbourhood streets. Every visit is tailored to your objectives and local context. Rather than simply showing “Dutch best practice”, we explore together what may be relevant and transferable to your own city, region or country.
Most visits last two to three days, although programmes can be shorter or longer depending on your objectives.
The Format
Prepare your visit
We start by discussing your objectives, local context and the questions you want to explore. Based on this, DCE recommends relevant themes, experts and locations and develops a tailored programme.
We’ll also ask about your delegation, including participants’ roles, language needs and cycling ability, so that the programme works for everyone.
Good to know: visits can be adapted for different levels of cycling confidence, including shorter routes, e-bikes, adapted cycles or walking alternatives.
Experience Dutch cycling in practice
During the visit, you combine expert presentations and discussion with first-hand experience of Dutch cycling environments. Depending on your objectives, this can include guided cycling tours, site visits and meetings with professionals from government, research, civil society and industry.
A DCE team member accompanies the group and coordinates the professional programme.
Good to know: most study visits last two to three days. The DCE organises the day programme, including expert speakers, bicycles, venues and lunches. Your organisation arranges travel and accommodation; we can provide recommendations.
Take it home
The visit doesn’t end when the programme finishes. Afterwards, we share presentations, photos, additional resources and key lessons from the visit.
We also invite feedback and remain available for questions and further exchange as you translate what you have learned into your own context.
