Programmes – ThinkBike Workshops™

Bring Dutch cycling expertise to your city or region

A DCE ThinkBike Workshop™ brings Dutch cycling experts together with local professionals, representatives and decision-makers to work on cycling-related challenges in your city or region. Through expert input, field visits and collaborative sessions, participants explore current conditions, exchange perspectives and develop practical ideas and strategies together.

Every workshop is tailored to your objectives and local context. Rather than applying a ready-made “Dutch solution”, we combine Dutch experience with local knowledge and work together on one or two real local case studies.

The Format

1. Preparing the workshop

We start by discussing your objectives and selecting one or two concrete local case studies. Your team shares relevant plans, maps, data and background information, including the wider political and planning context. This allows our experts to prepare specifically for the challenges you want to address.

We also work with you to identify the right mix of participants. ThinkBike Workshops bring together different perspectives — for example planners, designers, engineers, policymakers, elected officials, public transport professionals and advocates.

Practical: a ThinkBike Workshop typically requires around two months of preparation and we recommend a maximum of around 30 participants so that the workshop remains interactive.

2. The ThinkBike Workshop™

The workshop combines expert presentations with hands-on group work around the selected case studies. Participants visit the locations by bicycle to experience current conditions first-hand, then work in mixed groups to explore possible solutions.

Dutch experience provides inspiration and a different perspective, while local knowledge ensures that ideas respond to the realities of the place. The groups bring their observations together into proposed designs, strategies or next steps and present these for discussion at the end of the workshop.

Practical: a ThinkBike workshop typically lasts three days, although the format is flexible. The host organisation arranges the workshop venue, local bicycles and lunches; DCE coordinates the Dutch expert team.

3. After the workshop

After the workshop, we share presentations, photos, additional resources and a summary of the key lessons. We also invite feedback and stay connected for questions and further exchange as you take the ideas forward locally.
